Care for your
Soil
In organic gardening, we don't feed the plant, we feed the soil. A living soil rich in microorganisms is the secret to healthy plants and abundant harvests. Learn how to prepare and maintain a nutrient-rich soil using compost and organic techniques.
Techniques for living soil
Make your own Compost
Transform plant waste from your kitchen and garden into the best possible fertilizer. Compost adds structure to the soil, retains moisture, and provides a feast of slow-release nutrients for your plants.
Mulching
Never leave the soil bare. Cover the soil with straw, dry leaves, or crushed pruning waste. This protects the earth from direct sun, reduces water evaporation, prevents the appearance of unwanted weeds, and adds organic matter as it decomposes.
Don't turn the soil
Avoid plowing or deeply turning the soil. This destroys the soil structure and kills beneficial microorganisms and earthworms living in different layers. Use a pitchfork or broadfork only to aerate slightly if it's very compacted.
