Evaluate your
Space
Before planting the first seed, it is essential to thoroughly know the environment you will be working with. Analyzing the conditions of your garden or balcony will allow you to make the most of every corner and ensure the success of your organic crop.
Factors to consider
1. Hours of sun
Observe your space at different times of the day. Fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, peppers) need at least 6-8 hours of direct sun, while leafy greens (lettuces, spinach) can tolerate partial shade.
2. Wind exposure
A very windy place can quickly dry out the soil and damage fragile plants. Consider installing natural barriers or windbreak meshes if your space is very exposed.
3. Access to water
Your garden will need frequent watering. Make sure you have a nearby water source or a system to store rainwater. You'll avoid carrying heavy watering cans in summer.
4. Soil type or support
If you grow directly in the ground, evaluate its texture and drainage. If you grow in pots or raised beds, make sure they have enough volume for root development and good drainage.
Practical observation tip
Draw a simple sketch of your space. Mark North, shadow areas cast by buildings or trees, and the wettest or driest areas. This map will be your best tool for the planning phase.
